Why Alignment-Based Yoga Could Be the Missing Piece in Your Practice

In the world of yoga, there are countless styles and approaches, from dynamic vinyasa flows to slow, meditative yin practices. Each has its benefits, and none are inherently better than another. But at Align with Alex, I’ve found that focusing on alignment within each pose can unlock a deeper level of strength, flexibility, and body awareness.

What is Alignment-Based Yoga?

Alignment-based yoga is about more than just getting into the "perfect" shape of a pose, it’s about understanding how your body moves and creating space to challenge old movement patterns.

For example, if you struggle with a forward fold, you might assume it’s due to tight hamstrings. But by adjusting the alignment of your pelvis or shifting the angle of your feet, you could discover that the restriction is actually coming from your lower back or hips. Small tweaks lead to big breakthroughs over time.

Why Alignment Matters
  1. Challenge the Path of Least Resistance
Our bodies are smart, sometimes too smart. When faced with resistance, we instinctively shift to an easier path, even if that means sacrificing proper alignment. Over time, this can create imbalances or even pain. Alignment-based yoga gently encourages you to stay with the resistance, helping you build strength and mobility in a balanced way.
  2. Increased Longevity and Joint Health
Flexibility is great, but sustainable, functional movement is even better. Working with your personal alignment means you’ll not only gain greater range of motion but also protect your joints and maintain mobility as you age.
  3. Personalised Cues for Your Unique Body
No two bodies are the same, which is why I don’t teach from a script. In each class, I’m looking at the yogis in front of me, offering adjustments and progressions based on their individual needs. This means you get a practice that’s tailored to you, not a one-size-fits-all experience.

So here's what we know
Alignment-based yoga isn’t about achieving picture-perfect poses, it’s about understanding your body, building strength, and moving with intention. Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or stepping onto the mat for the first time, this approach can help you feel more connected, balanced, and strong in your practice.
